Adding to the growing trend for industrial action in Europe, the French CGT Union has called on all freight staff, train drivers and controller to begin striking this evening for an unspecified period. The union is protesting at the failure of management and government to make effective decisions about the future of public transport in general and rail freight in particular. SNCF is radically re-structuring its single-wagon freight offering and this is likely to lead to the loss of thousands of jobs.
