According to a report recently published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, China is investing heavily in some of the most advanced Arctic research laboratories. If the Arctic ice melts, China could have a much shorter shipping route to Europe, which avoids pirate-threatened Africa. The report, which was published in Olso on Monday, says that if the ice melts the journey from Beijing to Hamburg would be shortened by 6400 km.
