The Journal of the Royal Society recently published the results of a survey which demonstrates the supremacy of sea freight in world trade.  The Survey tracked the movement of 16 636 cargo vessels around the world, and showed the complexity of an industry which moved 7.4 bn tonnes of freight in 2006.  The ports which recorded the highest number of shipping movements were Shanghai and Singapore.
