The only Motorway of the Sea currently operational is increasing its frequency from three sailings to five sailings per week.  The Bilbao to Zeebrugge service was started about eighteen months ago, and has been successful in attracting large volumes of freight lorries away from the roads and on to its short sea shipping services.  With the help of EU funding, the shipping line was able to provide a service which in some cases has reduced customers costs by 20%.  Freight transport is forecast to increase by 70% in the EU by 2020, and the European commission is hoping that this initiative will move cargo off the roads, reducing carbon emissions and costs.
