A study commissioned by British Waterways and published in May suggested that the River Trent was an under-used water facility in the centre of England, and could accommodate twice the amount of freight which currently moves on the river. There would have to be some improvements in locks and waterways between Nottinghamshire and Humberside to facilitate this, but with this proviso 1 million tonnes of extra freight per year, including waste, could be taken off the roads.
