From 1 February 2009, Russia will be charging all European trucks over 3.5 tonnes RUR 385 per day for the privilege of using the roads. The British International Freight Association, which represents freight forwarders and other logistics service providers in the UK, advises that the charge has to be paid within 24 hours of crossing the border and applies to freight vehicles from all EU countries, Switzerland and Turkmenistan. The Director of EU affairs for SKAL – the transport and logistics association in Finland – says that this amounts to discrimination against foreign operators. There is no road toll for Russian trucks.
