Singapore saw the opening of the biennial event which attracts all the major operators in shipping and ocean freight transport; Singapore is situated in a region where shipping is an important contributor to the economy, and is seen by some economists as a barometer of economic wellbeing. The organisers are hoping to attract more than 12 000 visitors to the conference which is themed ‘The Asian Voice in World shipping’, and the opening speech suggested that there would be a container shortage in the near future.
Further discussions will cover the bulk freight sector, freight finance, energy, ballast water treatment and emission regulations.
