Shipping operations along the Rhine, one of Europe’s most critical arteries for container and chemical transport, have been brought to a near standstill as prolonged dry weather continues to drive water levels to historic lows.

Navigable depths along key stretches of the river have dropped so significantly that barge transport is now largely unviable, placing considerable strain on supply chains that depend on this vital inland waterway.

The Rhine serves as a crucial corridor for the movement of raw materials, chemicals, fuel, and containerised goods between major European ports and inland industrial hubs. With barges unable to operate at full capacity, or in some cases at all, cargo owners are being forced to seek alternative transport solutions, including rail and road freight, often at considerably higher costs.

The disruption highlights the growing vulnerability of European logistics networks to climate-related challenges. Freight forwarders and shippers across the continent are now contending with extended transit times, reduced load capacities, and rising surcharges as carriers adjust to the constrained operating conditions.

At RW Freight, we continue to monitor the situation closely and work with our partners to identify flexible routing options and multimodal alternatives, ensuring our clients’ cargo keeps moving despite the ongoing challenges.

Businesses relying on European inland shipping are encouraged to review their logistics strategies and plan ahead, as further disruption is anticipated should the dry conditions persist.
