Danish Shipping has warmly welcomed a new European Union proposal that would recognise Indian ship recycling facilities under the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, describing the move as a significant step forward for responsible ship recycling worldwide.

The proposal acknowledges ship recycling operations in India that comply with the standards set out in the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. India remains one of the world’s largest ship recycling nations, and its inclusion on the EU-approved list would provide shipowners with greater flexibility when decommissioning vessels responsibly.

Industry leaders have long argued that expanding the EU list to include compliant Indian yards will help drive higher safety, environmental, and labour standards across the sector. By formally recognising these facilities, the EU aims to encourage further investment in modern recycling infrastructure and ensure that end-of-life vessels are dismantled in a manner that protects both workers and the environment.

For the wider maritime and freight forwarding industry, the proposal signals a positive shift towards more sustainable supply chain practices.
