The European Union’s energy landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation, with significant implications for freight forwarding and supply chain logistics. Russian natural gas exports to the EU via pipeline have collapsed from over 40 per cent in 2021 to just 8 per cent in 2023, marking a fundamental shift in European energy security.

This seismic change has positioned Norway as Europe’s primary energy supplier, filling the void left by reduced Russian exports. By the first quarter of 2024, Norwegian gas has become increasingly critical to European energy infrastructure, creating new logistics challenges and opportunities.

For the freight forwarding sector, this realignment presents both complexities and prospects. The shift in energy supply routes requires adapted transport solutions, enhanced security measures, and revised logistics strategies.
