Representatives from the rail freight industry have been urging European institutions to consider merging the Combined Transport Directive (CTD) and the Weights and Dimensions Directive. However, the likelihood of this fusion remains low, as the two directives serve different purposes and have distinct legal bases. The CTD aims to promote the shift from road freight to more environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as rail and inland waterways, while the Weights and Dimensions Directive focuses on harmonising the maximum weights and dimensions of road vehicles across the EU.
