Dog and cat food exports from the United States to Chile have nearly tripled since 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The agency forecast that retail sales of dog food in Chile will increase 29% to more than US$1 billion annually by 2027. Cat food sales were projected to rise 45% to more than US$600 million annually. This presumably will give the USA more opportunities for cat food exports.
Imports dominate the Chilean pet food market. The high cost of shipping European and Asian products potentially creates opportunities for U.S. pet foods, according to the FAS.
