A new Carbon Tax is being discussed this week at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting of the IMO. The tax may raise freight costs to shippers above their already record levels.

The global business organisation which represents cargo owners who export and import, the Global Shippers Forum, has expressed fears of further increases.

The MEPC will now discuss a proposal put forward by the shipping industry to introduce a Carbon Tax on bunker fuel. This fuel options could eventually double the current price of tradition bunker fuels.
