More than 4,000 high-quality French breeding pigs arrived by air freight from China so far this year, as the world’s top pork producer rebuilds its decimated hog herd.

China is increasing imports to restock after an outbreak of African swine fever from late 2018, killing tens of millions of pigs.

Increasing pork prices and government incentives to rebuild have prompted farmers who had stopped buying to resume imports, with some doubling quantities which had been signed prior to the disease.
