The Scottish government has announced plans for detailed design work on a reinstated passenger train service to Levenmouth.

This was welcomed by the Scottish Rail Freight Group, whose spokesman said that it was important for the Scottish Government to works closely with whisky distillers, logistics companies and the rail industry to ensure that the freight potential of the Levenmouth line is fully developed.

Sending freight by train can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 76 per cent compared with road freight, even where road collection and delivery are required at either end of the rail freight section.

Moving freight from road to rail can offer a ‘quick win’; you can do the same overall freight movement for less carbon, rather doing things completely differently (as is often the climate change prescription in other sectors).
