The European Bike Manufacturers Association is requesting the European Commission to begin registering imports of e-bikes from China. Because Chinese bike exporters fear that a provisional duty will be imposed on their exports, e-bike imports from China to Europe are reaching new highs. These bikes are being stock-piled with European distributors.
Statistics from the Customs organisation in China show that e-bike exports from China grew by 83% in 2017 compared to 2016. A total of close to 793,000 e-bikes were exported to the European Union’s 28 member states; up 83% on the 434,000 total of 2016.
European e-bike manufacturers are concerned about having to compete with subsidised Chinese imports for another season.
