The first steps for New Zealand to resume a trade deal on lamb exports to Iran will not be until next season, says one meat processor.

A spokesman for one of two exporters working with import companies in Iran, said the company was still in the very early process of making agreements and but it was likely to be an opportunity for next season.

While speaking at the Central Districts Fieldays earlier this month, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said he had just returned from Iran where he had signed a veterinary agreement that would pave the way for exports to Iran.
