The UK Government willbuild a new “secure zone” for British-bound freight lorries at Calais, to stop vehicles being targeted by illegal immigrants.
Theresa May, the Home Secretary, said that a special holding area will be constructed next to the ferry terminal and Channel Tunnel entrances in northern France which will be able to contain up to 230 freight lorries.
The area will be able to absorb up to two and a half miles of queues, in an attempt to avoid a repeat of scenes at the end of June involving thousands of migrants trying to break into freight transport.
Ministers will also begin talks with other EU countries to bring security of their freight lorries up to British standards, she told MPs in the Commons.
Currently only 7 per cent of illegal immigrants discovered by the authorities are in British-registered trucks.
