In September 2012, a major French logistics operator began use the river Seine to transport goods in containers by barge to stores in Paris, saving almost half a million road miles per year.  A terminal in the city centre has been adapted to receive the barges, which are unloaded by crane. It is hoped that more cargo within the city will be moved by river and rail freight.
