The parliament of Norway has approved a new bill introducing permanent rules to enable cargo shipping to employ armed guards.  Ships will be able to use armed guards when sailing in high risk areas; the government will also provide naval frigates and special forces teams for anti piracy duties.

The shipping industry is already benefiting from increased protection, but it is hoped that the new measures will give additional protection to the ships, their personnel and their freight.
