Exporters from Tasmania are suffering increased costs because they have lost their direct shipping link to Asia in April last year.  Freight now has to be shipped vial Melbourne, which in some cases has doubled freight costs. Local growers say that the trip across the Bass Strait is eating up between 30 and 55 percent of the shipping costs to Asia. The government’s aid package does not include international freight subsidies.
