Perth in Western Australia has become the main distribution point for interstate general freight.  Planning has begun to move the emphasis away from Perth by developing an intermodal terminal in Kalgoorlie-Bouler, as well as a sealed road link. If freight generated in the east can be diverted north along the Goldfields Highway at Kalgoorlie-Boulder, there will be a distance saving of about 600 km.
