Intermodal barges services are being developed for shipping containers in the Nord-Pas de Calais in France and the Wallonia region in Belgium. It is planned that new multimodal terminals for freight will be developed along the future broad gauge Seine-Nord Europe canal.  The canal will link the Seine basin, including Paris, to Belgium.

An agreement has been signed between the Port of Dunkirk and the Belgian inland port of Liege to develop the intermodal freight services.  It is hoped that up to 12 river and sea ports could be included in the system.
