The Port of Gothenburg in Sweden received an environmental award in London last month. The Sustainable Shipping Award for Environmental Protection, was given for the port’s environmental and climate initiatives.
Together with shipping companies and environmental organisations, the port has developed a program in which vessels which contribute to cleaner seas and air are rewarded. One example of this is that ships which run on a cleaner fuel in the port area, are reimbursed for their increased fuel costs. The program also rewards ships for good “environmental performance” according to the Clean Shipping Index.
‘ The primary reason that we received the award is the innovative approach, we created this program with our customers and environmental organisations”, said the port’s environment manager Åsa Wilske at the ceremony in London.
