A JOINT rail freight initiative is planned to help ease pressure from some of the state’s busiest roads.

The state government will partner with Graincorp and will invest $8.5 million into upgrading and building new train loading and infrastructure suitable to carry freight trains along the soon to be upgraded Murray Basin Rail network.

The government says the network will allow an extra 500,000 tonnes of freight, including grain to be transported by rail.

This significant change will take freight trucks off the road and result in lower transportation costs to farmers.
