The freight turnover of the terminals of the Estonian freight transit operator Transiidikeskus AS in the first quarter totaled 639,000 tons, 1.1% less than in the previous year.

The Muuga container terminal of Transiidikeskus handled 48,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of containers, which represents a year-on-year drop of 8.7%. The tonnage of goods exported in containers decreased 4.2%, the company said.

The general goods terminal handled 122,200 tons of break bulk and bulk export goods, 14.4% more than the year before.

“Against the backdrop of the whole sector’s fall, we’re making efforts to find new clients. Of course I agree with the Port of Tallinn’s new chief Valdo Kalm that finding new cargo flows is the joint task of the whole sector. If the sector has bad times and neighbors have lowered their harbor and freight dues so as to win big international clients, our cost structure cannot remain the same as in good times,” Transiidikeskus CEO Erik Laidvee said.
