The Port of Antwerp-Bruges recorded a decline in container volumes during the first quarter of 2024, with adverse weather conditions and labour unrest cited as the primary contributing factors. Despite these setbacks, the Belgian gateway managed to outperform Rotterdam, which traditionally holds the position as Europe’s busiest container port.

Notably, both ports reported minimal disruption during the quarter as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, suggesting that operational impacts from the regional tensions have remained relatively contained for Northern European hubs.

The shift in rankings highlights the volatile nature of container throughput across Europe’s principal maritime gateways, with operational challenges continuing to influence performance metrics across the sector. For freight forwarders and shippers alike, monitoring these developments remains essential for effective supply chain planning and route optimisation.

At RW Freight, we continue to keep a close watch on European port performance to ensure our clients receive timely, reliable freight forwarding solutions across all major trade lanes.
