According to the latest data from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, most goods within the EU were transported by sea in 2023. The report indicates that maritime transport played a crucial role in freight movement across the region. Inland waterways accounted for a modest 1.6% of total freight transport, while air transport contributed an even smaller share. These findings highlight the significance of sea routes in facilitating trade and logistics within the European Union, emphasising the need for efficient port infrastructure and seamless maritime operations to support the smooth flow of goods across member states.
