Canada is considering the implementation of import tariffs on electric vehicles from China in response to the challenges faced by the domestic automotive industry. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has attributed these difficulties to China’s state-directed policy of overcapacity, which has led to an influx of Chinese electric vehicle imports into Canada.

In an effort to address this issue, the Canadian government has initiated a public consultation proces. This consultation aims to assess the potential impact of import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and to determine the most appropriate course of action to support the domestic car sector.

This move comes as Canada seeks to balance its trade relations with China while protecting the interests of its local automotive industry.
As the public consultation progresses, industry experts, trade associations, and consumers will have the opportunity to provide their insights and recommendations. The feedback gathered during this process will play a crucial role in shaping Canada’s policy response to the challenges posed by Chinese electric vehicle imports.
