The Premier of South Australia, says that the freight transport industry could be asked to contribute to the cost of infrastructure projects such as major roads. The Government outlined a $36 billion, 30-year transport plan in October.

The state is currently undertaking several major road projects, including the Southern Expressway duplication and the South Road Superway, with debate continuing with the Federal Government on the South Road upgrade.

Southern Australia has huge infrastructure needs. If the State Government provides this the government debt will be unusustaible. Involving the private sector – especially freight and transport which are the main users of the roads – will help finance the development.

Opposition spokeswoman Vickie Chapman says introducing a charge for freight vehicles is the first step towards broader tolls.
