A ban on imports of Russian grain is being discussed at the European level after Latvia’s suggested it.

What companies import grain, does this production remain in Latvia, how does it affect the competitiveness of local farmers and how in turn would the ban affect the transport sector? These are the questions being asked in Latvia.

Russian grain has not been included on the European Union’s (EU) sanctions list, so that impoverished countries have access to food. Some of the Russian grain passes through Latvia to other countries of the world, but this year around 400,000 tonnes of the imports have also remained in the European Union where the grain is used for both food and feed.
