Volumes of container rail freight should rise in consequence of recent Government reform, increasing investment, and the launch of several international services. Under the reformed government institutions a network of intermodal rail hubs is being set up. Fewer containers are moved by rail in China than in the US or Europe, and volumes are well below Government targets. Containers only account for a marginal share of China’s total rail freight market, but this is set to change.
