A freight train has been extensively damaged after hitting two steel bars believed to have been deliberately put on the tracks near Stawell, about 230 kilometres west of Melbourne in Australia.

The freight train with 34 carriages was travelling west just before 10:30pm last night when the driver heard a loud bang as the train approached Stawell station. The train hit two steel bars, which police believe were deliberately placed on the track, causing extensive damage to the train’s engine.

The impact ruptured the fuel tank, spilling 5,000 litres of diesel fuel on to the tracks. The train was shunted back to the Stawell train yard for repairs.

Police are appealing for information about the incident.
