According to a recent report, 85% of freight and shipping companies which have fleets which will be unable to operate in a low-carbon future. Only 7% of the companies have published plans to phase out fossil-fuel-powered modes of transportation.

This is partly because some solutions which freight operators will need to implement e.g. alternative fuels and cleaner vehicles – are still in the early stages of development.

In June 2021, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a set of agreements on regulations concerning the “carbon intensity” of shipping.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Port Authorities of Rotterdam and Gothenburg last week for a Green Corridor to support sustainable shipping.
