A Chinese freight ship has made the first ever voyage through the Northeast Passage. The Arctic Ocean shipping route north of Russia has been opened up by Arctic ice melting and reduces the journey from China to Europe by thousands of kilometres.  The commercial shipping route is open for only about four months a year when the ice is melting.
