A report commissioned by the UK Chamber of Shipping suggests that new emission targets could force freight back on to the roads from the sea. From the year 2015 shipping companies within the North Sea, English Channel and Baltic Sea Emission Control areas will be forced to use fuel with a sulphur content of less than 1%. The huge cost of meeting these targets may mean that some ferry routes will no longer be financially viable.
