A speaker at the recent IATA conference said that modal shift is reducing the volume of air freight.  He said that the airfreight industry lost five million tonnes of cargo to sea, road and rail freight.

This had still enabled the airfreight to reach the highest level on record at 16.5 bn freight tonne km in 2014. Air freight volumes are increasing in the Middle Eastern airlines, but falling for lines based in the Asia Pacific.
