Imports of roses continued to arrive from Kenya, as did electronics imports from Asia. Air freight at Schiphol was relatively unaffected by the corona crisis and freight transport in Amsterdam recorded a remarkable record.
The total amount of air freight in 2021 was not only significantly higher than in ‘corona year’ 2020, but even larger than in 2019, before the pandemic began.
Schiphol handled 1.66 million tons of cargo in 2021, an increase of 15 percent compared to 2020 and 5 percent more than in 2019. Air freight to the two airports in the Netherlands which specialize in cargo – Schiphol and Maastricht Aachen Airport – almost reached the level of the record years 2017 and 2018.
