Tilbury and Bilbao have received funding from the EU for the “Motorways of the Sea” project which aims to take freight off the roads and on to the sea. It is planned that over 225 million km of freight miles between Spain and the UK will be moved from road to short sea over a 15 year period. At Tilbury the container port will be re-developed, and in Bilbao the grant will be used to expand the railhead and improve the freight interchange.
