Most countries in Europe are experiencing a severe shortage of freight truck drivers, as the career is less attractive to younger people. In Germany around 40% ofdrivers will retire over the next 10-15 years. In Sweden half of all road haulage companies had problems finding freight drivers. Across the European Union, 78% of cargo transported by land goes by road.
Many drivers have to unload the freight themselves on arrival at supermarkets and logistics centres, and sometimes have to wait for hours if they miss a time slot.
