The Annual Global Liner Shipping Conference took place in London on 17 April. The main themes of the conference were consolidation and globalisation. Shipping lines frequently merge and take over other companies, as ships get bigger and more expensive to operate.

A few years ago shipping lines ordered new ships, on the assumption that world economies would continue to grow. As European economies stagnate, carriers are being forced to consolidate.
