Responding to the threat from the USA to remove special treatment for Hong Kong, including export controls and extradition treatment, China has suspended imports of US pork and soybeans, apart from cotton and corn. China may introduce more stringent import controls on US farm goods, if the US retaliates to this measure.
China depends heavily on pork imports to meet its domestic demand and the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the supply chain of meat producers. China is unable to fulfil all its domestic requirements for meat.
