Initial agreements have been signed by the Dublin Airport Authority for a new freight logistics hub at Shannon airport. The new temperature-controlled warehouse would be build by a major US carrier, with infrastructures support from the DAA.

The new facility should encourage freight and logistics companies both from Ireland and abroad to base their operations at Shannon. It will be marketed to companies already at Shannon, and to potential new customers at home and abroad.

The airport will be able to bid for higher value, high volume freight business, as there will be chilled, frozen and ambient areas for perishable cargo.

Shannon is in a central location between the major economies of the US, Europe and Asia, and should be able to develop as an important global cargo destination if the new facility goes ahead.

In a statement yesterday, the DAA said the new cargo hub would provide significantly improved facilities for Shannon’s air cargo businesses and would radically reposition the airport’s cargo capabilities.

CEO Declan Collier said: “We will continue to work with Lynx to agree a final binding agreement for the new Shannon cargo facility over the coming months.”
