Japan is negotiating with China to resume exports of beef to the world’s largest market for the first time in about two decades.

Japan hopes to begin exports again next year, sources said. Beijing has been banning beef imports from Japan since the first case of ‘mad cow disease’ was detected in the country in 2001.

The Foreign Ministers are expected to sign a pact on animal health and quarantine, which is required before exports can resume.
Beef consumption in China has been rising, especially among high-income households.
