The Artic shipping season is gradually extending due to the oceans warming.  Canada is hoping to take advantage of this by developing the Port of Churchil in Hudson Bay as a northern gateway for container traffic to the USA via the Arctic ocean.  The port will mainly be used for imports form China transported to Murmansk via Moscow and then shipped to Churchill.   China is developing its western inland rail network and Canada wants to take advantage of this by boosting economic activity in its northern regions.  This will help Canada in its sovereignty claims in the Arctic region.
