One of the major trans-atlantic shipping lines is planning to recover its revenues by imposing three rate increases this year, in April, July and October.  The transatlantic route showed severe losses in 2009 as cargo volumes dropped due to world recession.  The shipping lines were forced to reduce freight rates in order to attract cargo, with the resulting negative effect on revenue and profit.  Volumes of cargo are now improving, but operating costs are also increasing.
