The Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers has complained about the influx of cheap sugar imports into the country.

The chairman of KNFSF told a media briefing in Nairobi that local farmers are unable to compete with foreign sugar because the cost of their inputs is so high.

“We are therefore calling for strict control of imports in order to protect the local sugar sector,” he said.

Most of the imports come duty free from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC) bloc.

The chairman noted that the number of farmers in the sugar sector has been on the decline since the liberalization of the industry.
