The Rail Freight Group has said that the success of the first refrigerated freight train from Spain to the United Kingdom, which arrived last week, shows the potential for taking more freight trucks off the roads. One hundred trucks per day carrying fresh fruit and vegetables currently run from Spain to the UK, emitting thousands of tonnes of carbon. The RFG hopes that rail will now be able to capture a large proportion of that freight. A refrigerated cargo train has been running from Italy to the UK since July; it is hoped that buyers and suppliers will now be convinced that this type of service can work well for imports of fresh produce.
