Members of the freight forwarding industry should make sure that they are fully conversant with the new Customs Procedures which were implemented on 1 July. This includes the EU-wide Export Control systems, and the introduction of the Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number (EORI).

The EORI replaces the TURN and is a unique identification number for a person or business involved in international trade which will be recognised by all Customs authorities in the world.  Any company, including those in the shipping and forwarding industries, who wishes to obtain Authorised Economic Operator status will require and EORI.  In addition, people or companies involved in pre- or post-shipment advices to Customs, or involved in the export, import or movement of goods under a transit procedure will need to apply for an EORI.

Freight and shipping companies should consult their software providers to confirm that the appropriate amendments have been made to enable them to comply with the requirements.
