An increasing amount of the cocoa imported by Dutch companies is ‘sustainable’, according to a report by the national statistics office CBS.

The percentage of sustainable cocoa imports used for processing in Dutch plants rose to 30% in 2016 from 21% in 2014.

Amsterdam is the largest cocoa importing port in the world, importing 20% of the annual harvest. The beans are processed by several large companies in the Zaan region north of Amsterdam.
Most of the part-processed products form exports to other European countries. The remainder is transported to chocolate producers, bakeries and other foods companies in the Netherlands for further processing. The Report said that 70% of processed cocoa was exported in 2016.
